For many people this particular solstice is a very special one. Since so many people believe this solstice to be powerful because of the end of a Mayan calendar and other prophecies, it has become so.
Every solstice is a wonderful time for contemplating the way we are leading our life.
Every solstice is an inflection point in the energies we experience.
In the northern hemisphere, the winter solstice marks the transition point from contraction to expansion of light in our days. Of course, the December solstice has the opposite effect in the southern hemisphere.
It’s fun to play with the natural energies of solstices. When light is expanding, we can focus on what we want to expand in life. When light is contracting, we can focus on letting go of that which no longer serves us, and remember that in the natural process of giving birth, women experience contractions right before the moment of birth. Contractions are not necessarily negative occurrences. By acknowledging the seasons and cycles of life, we work with the spiral of life’s energies. The solstice in December is also a natural time to set intentions for the year ahead.
Here is mine:
2012 Winter Solstice Intention
As we approach another year of the spiraling dance of life,
With life’s expansion and contraction,
With life’s balancing of light and dark,
May we find bliss in this sacred time of transition for all people on earth.
May we know and grow our ability to share our gifts and talents.
May we find wisdom and peace as we transcend our differences.
May pain and suffering be diminished as much as possible for all beings everywhere.
May the Great Spirit of Life grant every being the grace to be humble, loving and grateful.
May all of the earth’s family enjoy greater ease, relaxation, health, creativity, prosperity and deep satisfaction.
May we listen to the rhythm of creation in the animals, trees, stones, mountains, lakes, oceans and hear what life is telling us.
May we know that we are all part of a great continuum of life and need each other to be whole.
May we all experience love and joy and peace every day.
May we enchant the world with our presence in this wondrous time to be alive.
Daily Contemplation:
What is your intention for the upcoming year for yourself and others?

That was a beautiful intention, Karen. I also loved the metaphor of contractions before birth. I had never thought of it in quite that way before. My intention was for everything in, of or on this Earth to have peace, love and respect towards everything else in, of or on this Earth
